Who are all the LP candidates?

In Libertarian on July 1, 2008 at 2:26 pm

They are not all listed at LP.org

A few are here. Many more are not.

NC sent Independent Political Report a list (below). How about the other states? Please list your state lists of candidates – or links to such lists – in the comments!

Libertarians File List of 2008 Candidates

RALEIGH (June 30) — The race for North Carolina governor is now officially a three-person contest. The Libertarian Party of North Carolina formally presented its list of 38 candidates for the 2008 General Election to the State Board of Elections today.

Dr. Michael Munger tops the list as the LPNC gubernatorial candidate. Dr. Munger is joined by Phillip Rhodes, running for lieutenant governor and Mark McMains, running for commissioner of insurance.

Libertarians will also contest 24 seats in the General Assembly, 14 in previously unopposed contests. At the local level, five Libertarians are running for County Commission and one is running for Mecklenberg Register of Deeds.

Chris Cole is the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate. There are five Libertarian candidates for Congressional seats: Will Adkins, District 2; Maximillian Longley, District 4; Thomas Hill, District 8; Andy Grum, District 9, and; Keith Smith, District 11.

The Libertarian candidate for President of the United States, former Georgia Congressman Bob Barr, will be on the ballot along with his vice presidential running-mate, Wayne Root.

LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF NORTH CAROLINA
PO Box 28141 Raleigh NC 27611 * 877.843.5762 * http://www.LPNC.org

  1. Even as a radical libertarian, I’ve supported Barr. The Libertarian Party will never, and has not, accomplished anything as the party of dogmatic anarcho-capitalism. The idea of a broad libertarian coalition- including people from the right, left, and center who lean libertarian like Barr- makes much more sense to me. And I recall Barr talking about that kind of thing, iirc (not that he can be strictly blamed for the actions of National).

But what good is this broader coalition if all it does is continuing shooting its wad every four years on a Presidential candidate? That’s what we’ve been doing- to little or no substantive success. Even a candidate that pulls in 10% of the vote is a largely meaningless accomplishment if we don’t follow through in 2010 with a real effort to target local government, state legislatures, and select House races. The course of events (mainly the money/attention that flowed to Paul, in large part away from the LP) over most of this election cycle, and perhaps the lack of a serious effort, means that we have no such real, organized effort this year. (Not to disparage those who are running- Less power to you!) But if this is the way National is treating our candidates for this year, it doesn’t bode well for 2010 and 2012.

A “find LP candidates in your area!” feature should be prominently displayed on the lp.org homepage. To not even have a full list is inexcusable.

  2. Andy (not the petitioner Andy)

Since LP.org has no such list, I am trying to put it together here. Any states you can add to the list will be appreciated.

  3. I can’t find anything at the ARLP site, but I’m not surprised. After all, this is the state that could only find ONE guy willing and able to be a delegate to Denver. We don’t have a whole lot of candidates. I’ll shoot off an e-mail to our state chair, though.

And I’ll use my full name from now on to avoid confusion.

  21. Jason,

Thanks. And she is certainly welcome to do so if she wants. Still working on it as you can see.

  22. MT

Lists candidates. I was going to post them here until I noticed they were from 2006. Took a quick look at the four that had websites. Could not tell right away if any of them are running again.

  23. NE

Lists candidates. Bob Barr, Wayne Root, and that’s it.

  24. NV

    Did not find candidates listed

  25. NH

For some reason, acts weird when I try to cut and paste, but they have a list

    http://www.lpnh.org/LPNH/Election_2008.html

  26. NM

    Did not find anything

    NY

    2007 candidates.

  27. paulie
After 25 July (for reasons I cannot explain at the moment), Delaware will actually have at least one candidate

  28. Good list, glad someone is making it…

However, Mass is missing it’s current Pres. and VP Candidate – at least until / if National and / or the Barr campaign litigates to replace him – Don’t forget George Phillies for Pres, and Chris Bennet for VP…

Also, Libertarian Bill DiSciprio of Wakefield, Ma is running for Board of Selectman . This is the second time he’s run for this office. Last year he came very close to getting elected with no support. (this is a “non-partisan race”)

I will be running for my third term as a Billerica Town Meeting Rep in the Spring. (My GF was elected to her 2nd term in the spring of this year BTW)

We will also have non LPMA generated, but Libertarian oriented Referendum questions on the ballot to End the State Income Tax (replacing it with nothing – though I’m sure the legistature will try to find something…) and to partially decriminalize possessing small amounts of Marijuana – turns it into an expensive misdemeanor (and the cop still ends up stealing your weed…)

    ART

  29. Paulie,

You write: “(I have Tom’s email and phone, but they are not on his congressional webpage as far as I can see, so I won’t add them to this list without permission)”

Doh — I have a contact form at the site, and had intended to add a direct email link and phone number. Thanks for the reminder — fixed!

  30. I just noticed
    “NC House 30
    Sean Haugh
    1821 Hillandale Rd. 1B-332
    Durham NC 27705
    919-286-0152
    seanhaugh@mindspring.com

I hope this isn’t the same Sean Haugh from National that likes to tell people to burn petitions? If so, it could make things even more interesting assuming that criminal charges come down the way it appears they might from the other thread…

    ART

  31. Yes the same Sean Haugh . . . he lives in North Carolina.

I wonder, with the candidates that Paulie has taken the time to list, how many of them have Republican opponents which Barr has campaign financed through the PAC that bears his name?

Go conservatives . . .Go Barr!!!

Tyler Nixon? Or is he non LP?

  34. Hi ART.

I don’t really want to get into the substitution controversy. If national did not think that substitution would work, I expect they would have scrapped the petition after we got the revised ruling from the state and started over. I’d list George for NH, but something about their list is not cooperating with cut and paste.

Of course, once I have the list done, or even before, there is nothing which keeps anyone else from taking the list and posting it elsewhere with whatever additions they want to.

  35. TLK

    Thanks!

I’ll fix it on the other places I am posting the list.

  36. Art

Please provide as much contact info as possible for you and the other candidates you listed. You may also wish to put that info on LPMA website.

  37. JR

Thanks …is that the full list for TN? I still have O-W to complete the list otherwise.

  38. Pauli – per your request, here is more contact info on the Mass. candidates other than George…

Libertarian Bill DiSciprio of Wakefield, MA is running for Board of Selectman . He doesn’t have Internet, home phone 781-246-1139.

I will be running for my third term as a Billerica Town Meeting Rep in the Spring. (My GF was elected to her 2nd term in the spring of this year BTW)

  45. Steve: I also noticed the LP has at least one candidate against a “Ron Paul Republican”, namely in NC district 4. Truly, this does not make any sense. What difference would there be between Dr. B J Lawson http://www.lawsonforcongress.com , who has been described as a Libertarian by his GOP primary opponent and Ron Paul Jr.? It just does not make any sense and is a waste of time to field a candidate with which there is perhaps 95% – 100% agreement, only because he or her is from another party. In a close race, only 1 or 2% can just make the strategic difference between winning or losing.
After all, there are a few Ron Paul Libertarians, whom the Ron Paul Republican donors will also support, in money and in votes… but if the LP does not reach out?

  46. Pauli and others, great job to post all the candidates! The LP HQ seems to be very much behind with their list. I do like their new website though. Some of the candidates look…well and others look very smart. Well, you do not have to be intelligent to be a congressrepresentative, and judging by the way many of them vote and the issues they discuss, many of the D’ and R’s do not make much of an impression.

IMHO, the LP should identify a few areas where they fare quite well and concentrate on them in 2010 in order to go for a win and the rest can organise in a PAC or a pressure group. If many of the LP candidates can get a quantum leap performance in double digits or be quite competitive, they would be able
to win in say 2010, especially in say a 4 way race with the D’s,R’, G’ and L’s.

  47. Pauli and others, great job to post all the candidates!

Thanks. BTW that’s Paulie with an e on the end.

IE: Paul or Paulie, not Pauli.

  48. I’m still on the hook to do TX-WY but probably won’t have time today.

If anyone does, and feels like doing that part, it would be an appropriate way to celebrate the holiday.

Lists Tim Peterson for State Treasurer, but the blurb does not make it clear whether he is running again this year.

I know Kevin Barrett is running, and another LP member has expressed interest in running against him for the nomination for the 3rd Congressional district. Neither is listed on the page, as far as I can see.

  59. This candidate may have to be subtracted soon:

  60. It is curious why LP national, and many of the state LP organisations fail to list candidates.

Boston Tea Party is very interested in endorsing candidates from other parties who favor a smaller government at all levels and on all issues. See our site for a recent press release on the topic, and to learn more. http://www.bostontea.us/

Andy, above, says that the LP has not done anything as a party of anarcho-capitalism. But, what is it doing as a party of racist bigotry and Christian conservatism? You don’t have to leave the LP to find a better presidential candidate. But you might choose to do so.

  61. It occurs to me to wonder how long it’ll take for the Boston Tea Party to have more libertarian candidates (and, indeed, more Libertarian Party candidates) on our voter’s guide and endorsed by our party, than are currently listed on the LP national site. I count 28 on their site.

That node on our site: http://bostontea.us/voterguide We currently list 7 candidates.

  67. It’s time to have for us to have a Third party so you see were everyone stands at. To day two party looks a like to me people Get up Vote We have a great man running for President Bob Barr. We need a good Supreme Court not a World Court.Look at the Texas case Jose Ernesto Medellin’s to me there’s only one Court and thats the US Supreme Court. It my not be the best but to me it’s our Court
