  1. It is now Day 11 of 10 since the LNC demanded that Angela Keaton apologize or resign from the LNC. I have spoken to Angela. She is not going to resign. Rumors that the LNC will act on its threats are thus far just that, rumors.

Los AngelaGate seems unlikely to go away, not when it raises a basic question of whether or not the LNC is actually able to get things done. When you blow a substantial fraction of your only post-convention, pre-election board meeting on disciplining a member, as opposed for example to noting that your Presidential campaign is raising about 3% of the money it appeared to offer, that disciplinary issue must have been very very important. Turning your back and walking away from the issue within two weeks does not say much about your judgement in making it an issue in the first place.

Critics have noted to me that a major outcome of LosAngelaGate is that we have seen the extent to which there is a unified radical caucus on the LNC, and the extent to which that caucus will protect its own members from being thrown to the wolves. The extents are small, except for the valiant efforts of Rachel Hawkridge.

  2. Angela should not apologize. She did nothing for which she ought to be ashamed. Angela should not resign. She was elected by the delegates in Denver, and represents the members at large. The LNC should not remove her.

The LNC passed a resolution during the brouhaha calling for the US to remove its troops from Afghanistan. Earlier this week, the Boston Tea Party put the text of that resolution on its web site. Earlier this week, a Barr statement about Afghanistan, saying the situation there is deteriorating, was put on the LP.org web site, but there seems to be no time to put the LNC’s resolution on their own site. Rumor has it that the Boston Tea Party may issue a press release to carry the good news of this LNC resolution to the public. The LP has not issued a press release on its own national committee’s resolution.

Doesn’t that suck? One of the few productive things to come out of the meeting, and the LP staff can’t be bothered to mention it in a press release or put it on the site.

George, I’m very proud the Boston Tea Party endorsed your candidacy for president. You rock.

It seems clear that the Puritans among the radical caucus, and the non-radical Puritans on the LNC, are determined to find fault with Angela. It must be due to her principled stand against war. Or maybe the way she fills a Boston Tea Party tank top. Expedience and jealousy are shameful.

  3. Someone please put on the agenda a discussion about moving up the 2012 convention in order to give the candidate more time to visit state parties, build a campaing organization in said states, and avoid the petitioning screwups that occurred this time.

  4. Apparently the LP HQ staff refuse to issue the Afghanistan statement until it is relevant to the press cycle or some such.

It seems like the staff have more power than the LNC sometimes.

  5. I don’t think there’s any doubt that the staff have more power than the LNC. I can’t help but wonder why, especially given that some in key positions are very young and pretty much just out of college.

  6. Apparently the LP HQ staff refuse to issue the Afghanistan statement until it is relevant to the press cycle or some such.

I am going to address this in a separate post.

  7. I don’t think there’s any doubt that the staff have more power than the LNC.

My guess as to the reason is that the staff can devote 40+ hours per week to LP issues, while LNC members mostly do it in addition to other jobs.

If the LNC ever wants to talk to me about the Communications Director gig, just give me a holler…

With all the other ridiculous things going on having the convention in San Diego is just another one. We need to find a place in the middle of the country where we can get a good turnout of people from both coast as well as those in the middle.

    Press Release
    For Immediate Release
    Sep 16, 2008

    LNC Passes Afghanistan Resolution

At the Septemeber meeting of the Libertarian National Committee, the following resolution was passed:

WHEREAS the government of the United States should return to its
historical libertarian tradition of avoiding entangling alliances,
foreign quarrels, and military adventures; and

WHEREAS the stability and security of Afghanistan lie outside the
jurisdiction of the government of the United States; and

WHEREAS the Libertarian Party recognizes that the only legitimate
role of the military is to defend America against direct attack or the
    imminent threat of attack;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Libertarian National Committee
calls on the government of the United States to withdraw the armed
forces of the United States from Afghanistan, without undue delay.

  10. geographic middle?

    population middle (leans east)?

    LP member middle (no idea)?

  11. @MHW

Notice the date (16th). They backdated this PR to bury it.

This sort of silly game-playing has to stop.

I will write up this whole pathetic saga in more detail as a case study in just how dysfunctional the LP leadership is right now. There’s a broader lesson here, and I hope to help drive it home in some small way.

As for the release, it’s pathetic, but at least it’s short enough to not contain embarrassing gaffes. We need to get the word out to antiwar/pro-peace groups.

  12. Overheard on my secret bug that I installed at the LP Watergate office:

“There’s just no pleasing that Hogarth. We put the stupid release up at LP.org just so she would not do her article, and here she’s going to publish it anyway. Curses, foiled again!”

  13. Uh, wait a second: SD being the ’10 convention site was just a rumor last I heard.

Will ask about that later today.

  14. OK, now the date is the 17th – after the ‘mistake’ was pointed out.

    Same burying effect.

And, I was wrong. In a PR with ONE original sentence, they managed to include a typo.

At the Septemeber meeting of the Libertarian National Committee, the following resolution was passed:

    Sheesh.

  15. Susan, Andrew Jackson once said that its a damn poor mind that can’t think of at least two ways to spell any word🙂

Any how good of you to find out it was back dated.

So far I don’t see where it was picked up by anyone. Gotta try and see if any of the wire services picked it up.

If a resolution was passed and no one saw the press release will it ever make a difference?

But we know fer sure someone is reading this list. Good for them. I’m gonna prove Andy Jackson right eventually.

    MHW

  16. OK, Michael Wilson, the ’10 convention is NOT in San Diego. Straight from the Keaton. It’s just a thing they do to get discounted rates for the meeting room.

    Hope that clears that up.

  17. Cool! Nice to get the straight dope once in awhile on the convention.

I queried Libertarian party at the AP website and nothing on the press release turned up. Interesting to say the least.

    MHW

  18. Are the other LP press releases there?

  19. One other thing to relay: The Keaton is taking herself into a hole and taking the hole with her to catch up on antiwar stuff, the LNC stuff is on the back burner for now, that she will neither resign nor apologize, she loves Doherty and will have his children when Providence deems it to happen, and she likes hanging out with Team Seebeck.

Oh, yeah, and she kicked ass on the interview and we had a relaxing time just shooting the breeze here.

  20. paulie I have not had a chance to check on any other press releases. been busy.

    MHW

  21. BTW why do all these meetings have to be at some ritzy place? What’s with this outfit? Meet at the Motel 6 in Humbolt County for gawd’s sake. They got a nice room. Go for pizza across the street. I bet Best Western would even offer better rates.

    MHW

  22. In their defense, $99/night is rather cheap. And I think this is out of pocket for LNC members.

  23. There are usually more reasonable places to stay nearby, sometimes right next door.

  24. Will teh LNC allow the fair Angela through the door? Or will they close the door in her smiling face?

My defense of Angela is now beginning at
