The Starr Resolution

The following is the letter Aaron Starr proposed the LNC send to Ron Paul, offered in response to the letter of apology suggested by Rachel Hawkridge.

September 13, 2008

The Honorable Ron Paul
Committee to Re-Elect Ron Paul
837 W. Plantation
Clute, TX 71531

Dear Dr. Paul:

The Libertarian National Committee is disappointed to learn that you have recently urged those in the freedom movement to vote for the likes of Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney and Chuck Baldwin, none of whom truly grasp the meaning of Liberty.

More than before, we remain committed to our nominees for President and Vice President, Bob Barr and Wayne Root. We believe both of them boldly present the ideals of limited government, lower taxes, lower spending, and more freedom to the American people.

We invite you to restore your commitment to Liberty by supporting the only candidates on the ballot this year who understand the Constitution and are prepared to restore our republic to what the Founders believe

Toward Liberty,

The Libertarian National Committee:

  1. The “Libertarian” Party had all the Ron Paul fans handed to them on a silver platter this year. Unsurprisingly, they did everything conceivable to fuck it up. The LP could have picked a standard no-name radical libertarian and not sent out a single press release since the convention, and things couldn’t have turned out anywhere close to this bad. Hell, run Badnarik again! Nobody else could do screw things up as bad if he tried.

Why in the world does Paul have an obligation to endorse Barr and the LP, and candidate and party that emphatically reject his positions?

  2. The Libertarian Party’s official positions are much closer than any other party to those of Ron Paul.

  3. If Badnarik were running this year the LP would have a great turn out. I don’t regret voting for him in 2004, my husband even voted for him, and happily so. It’s too bad that the LP has such a shitty candidate this year, a year when voters are seriously pissed and ready for change. Barr shit all over the Ron Paul Revolution – it’s clear he and his ilk are out to destroy whatever is left of the LP.

  4. Just in case that happens, we are starting a new Jeffersonian Caucus in the Democratic Party.

Anyone interested, drop me and/or GE a line. Or drop a comment here.

  5. Sometimes it is best to just shut up. Sometimes people think others are stupid and then they open their mouths and prove it.

    MHW

  6. “The Libertarian National Committee is disappointed to learn that you have recently urged those in the freedom movement to vote for the likes of Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney and Chuck Baldwin, none of whom truly grasp the meaning of Liberty.”

And yet you encourage people to vote for Barr, who has even less of a grasp on liberty than any of the candidates you listed?

  7. In the end it is Bob and Verney’s strategical mistake. If he can’t apologize or rectify the situation then it’s his votes to lose. There is no need for the LNC to do Bob’s dirty work here. The downside is that future ballot access for certain states could be affected in a negative way.

  8. Please don’t send the above letter. It won’t serve any purpose except further irritate Dr. Paul. I’m still of the opinion our party should apologize for Mr Barr’s rude behavior. It would have been one thing to simply politely decline to attend, but Bob chose to blow the event off, then call his own press conference??? It was an intentional slap to Dr Paul, and it struck me that it was out of jealousy (yes, plain old I-want-what-you-have jealousy.)

  9. The Starr resolution will not pass. It’s also horseshit and shows a clear lack of understanding of what the C4L NPC conference was all about.

The proposed apology letter is to indicate that the actions of Barr and his idiots are not those of the LP, to save face for the party.

Barr wouldn’t know the words, “I’m sorry, I screwed up” if they were stapled to his forehead. He was thinking of himself only, not big picture. Ditto Verney, Davis, Kraus, and Cory.

  10. tg: It’s too bad Badnarik had that disastrous 2006 campaign. He would be right up the Ron Paul Revolution’s alley, otherwise.

  11. Like NewletterGate, PressConference Snafu will pass. In a year or 2, few will remember. And, for those that do, fewer will know the actual truth of what happened.

  12. I would urge the BTP to send a similar letter urging RP supports to vote for the only true Liberty Party. All — PLEASE send in your resignation today to the LP and join the BTP, times a wastin!

PS – To SL, AK and others on the LNC, don’t put up with this poop any longer, take a stand fro liberty and principle, quit and join the BTP, we’ll give you a seat at the table where your voice will be heard!

  13. It’s becoming clearer every day that both the LNC and the Barr campaign either have no idea what they’re doing or they’re intentionally trying to kill the LP. Either way it looks like the best thing Ron Paul can do is ignore both groups completely and continue on with his own agenda.

  14. Bob,

    You write:

“Like NewletterGate, PressConference Snafu will pass. In a year or 2, few will remember. And, for those that do, fewer will know the actual truth of what happened.”

    I disagree.

Bob, you know that I am no big Ron Paul fan, that I urged libertarians not to support his GOP campaign and hoped that he would not seek the LP’s nomination.

HOWEVER … over the last year, his activities have politically energized at least thousands, probably tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of voters.

Some portion — probably a considerable portion — either already were, or became, libertarian-leaning during the course of their involvement with the Paul campaign and C4L.

That portion of Paul’s supporters was a natural constituency for the LP to pick up as new LP voters, new LP activists, etc.

And Bob Barr told them, in effect, to go fuck themselves.

If, by “few will remember,” you mean “only a small percentage of 300+ million Americans,” you’re probably right.

If, by “few will remember,” you mean “only a small percentage of the thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands whom Paul tried to dump in the LP’s lap,” you’re way wrong.

If we’re both still alive and still know each other 20 years from now, I bet you $20 that I’ll be able to identify 20 individuals who reply to mentions of the Libertarian Party on the Internet (or whatever replacement we have for it) with something along the lines of “I thought about going for them in 2008 after Paul lost the GOP race, but they blew my support right out their ass with Bob Barr’s shenanigans.”

  15. “If we’re both still alive and still know each other 20 years from now, I bet you $20 that I’ll be able to identify 20 individuals who reply to mentions of the Libertarian Party on the Internet (or whatever replacement we have for it) with something along the lines of ‘I thought about going for them in 2008 after Paul lost the GOP race, but they blew my support right out their ass with Bob Barr’s shenanigans.'”

I know people who were energized to political activism by the Ron Paul campaign who have said this about Bob Barr and the Libertarian Party.

    “G.E.
tg: It’s too bad Badnarik had that disastrous 2006 campaign. He would be right up the Ron Paul Revolution’s alley, otherwise.”

GE is right. Badnarik would have been a GREAT candidate this year.

  16. More effort by Starr, Holtz and the LRC gang to kill the LP.
