LNC Passes Afghanistan Resolution: Get the H*ll Out!

In Libertarian on September 7, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Exciting and positive news from the LNC meeting!
The Libertarian National Committee finally passed a strongly-worded out-of-Afghanistan-now resolution. Yes, only seven years too late, but better late than never. The resolution was offered by Pat Dixon and passed ‘easily’ according to Angela Keaton, but I do not have the exact vote tally.
This resolution was, in my opinion, vital to the LP at this point to serve as a countermeasure to Obama’s obvious desire to escalate U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, and to position the LP as the legitimate Peace Party.
The resolution follows:
WHEREAS the government of the United States should return to its historical libertarian tradition of avoiding entangling alliances, foreign quarrels, and military adventures; and

WHEREAS the stability and security of Afghanistan lie outside the jurisdiction of the government of the United States; and

WHEREAS the Libertarian Party recognizes that the only legitimate role of the military is to defend America against direct attack or the imminent threat of attack;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Libertarian National Committee calls on the government of the United States to withdraw the armed forces of the United States from Afghanistan, without undue delay.

  1. Good resolution.

I’m skeptical we will make much in the way of inroads in the peace movement at this point, unfortunately (I hope to be proven wrong).

The “pragmatists” in the peace movement will continue to tout Obama and the Democrats come hell or high water or both, and those looking for a real peace party will find that the Greens have been much more consistent and out front than the LP.

Minor somewhat related anecdote: at Green Party national I was wearing an Antiwar.com shirt Keaton gave me. Malik Rahim asked me what antiwar.com was and said he is on the board of UFPJ. They haven’t even heard of antiwar.com?

The time to do this, as Susan correctly points out, was seven years ago. HUGE blown opportunity and that does not even begin to explain it.

    Still glad they did it…

  2. One wonders whether the LP would call for withdrawing the armed forces of the US from Germany, Japan, or South Korea, to name only three of many dozens.

  3. John, they have, many times. It might have been in the platform at one time, but I don’t pay attention to Platform issues anyway.

  4. This directly contradicts W.A.R., who wants a “surge” in Afghanistan because the “surge” in Iraq was so “successful.”

  6. Whoopee. This was done only four years too late.

  7. I still say seven years ago.

Better late than never, I guess.

  8. Yeah, maybe the LNC can pass a resolution condemning Clinton’s bombing of Sudan at the next meeting, after kicking out Mary Ruwart.
