Newest Barr brochure, distributed by LPHQ, fails to even mention the LP

In Libertarian on July 23, 2008 at 6:26 pm

A tri-fold brochure, in both color and black and white, has been distributed to LP state chairs by LP Media Director Andrew Davis. This brochure is about Bob Barr’s presidential campaign, and can be seen at color-trifold

Nowhere does the brochure mention the Libertarian Party, or even use the word “libertarian”. It also gives no information for those who would like to join or contribute to the Libertarian Party.  In fact, unless someone just happens to know that Barr is the LP’s nominee, they won’t even know that he is a Libertarian candidate.

What is wrong with this picture?

  1. Plenty.

Earth to LPHQ: FIX THE FLYER!

Davis, your job as media director is to make sure the LP name gets in and stays in the news. You don’t do that my no mentioning the LP. Even county-level media directors know that!

    Michael Seebeck
Media Director, LPCO, 2002-3 (among other things)

  2. Dunno if it’s my PDF viewer or what, but there seems to be an issue with the cap Is and lowercase Ls. They appear as bold and outsized.

In fact, unless someone just happens to know that Barr is the LP’s nominee, they won’t even know that he is a Libertarian candidate.

    The silver lining!

  3. If this was a Barr brochure made and distributed by the Barr campaign, then I can understand. Hell, if this was a brochure from *any* of our candidates, I would understand. After all, a campaign is all about selling the candidate.

However, before making any judgments on this, I need to know the full story behind it. Although Davis is the LP media Director, he has apparently been working FOR the Barr campaign. Is that correct? If he was working on behalf of the Barr campaign, then no worries. If he was working for the LP, then that is just stupid. An LP brochure needs to *at least* mention the LP. Common sense, you know.

  4. Gene: He sent it in his capacity as LP Media Director, using the LP internal contact system for state chairs.

I have edited the below only to save those involved from spam, but this is the header.

Subject: [Statechairs] Barr Campaign Brochure Update
    Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2008 13:06:57 -0400
From: Andrew Davis (Andrew.davis at lp.org)
    Reply-To: statechairs at hq.lp.org
To: Statechairs Discuss (statechairs at hq.lp.org)

He also signed it as follows.

    Andrew Davis
    National Media Coordinator
    Libertarian National Committee, Inc.
    Andrew.davis at lp.org
    Office: 202-333-0008 ext. 225
    Cell: 202-731-0002

I don’t think there can be any question that he was acting in his official LP capacity.

Susan: The l’s looked that way to me as well.

  5. The sane possibility for a Libertarian Presidential campaign is to do the things that build our party by doing things that a winning campaign does. This brochure does not even appear to ask for money or volunteer time at the ‘where to mail’ level.

  6. The ultimate LP stealth candidate. Get 3,000,000 votes but LP only gains, say, 3,000 members. Anyone want to bet that the LNC has a real hard time getting access to the Barr contributor and e-mail lists when this thing is over (no matter what has been promised)? Some remember having to fight tooth and nail to get access to Ron Paul’s lists after 1988 election.

It doesn’t have a “where to mail” spot to complain about. But then, this campaign doesn’t seem to be a takeover of the LP, but a raiding party. I think that Barr, Verney and Viguerie didn’t join the LP to take it over, but to loot and pillage it, then leave a bit of scorched earth in their wake when they leave.

I think that this campaign is Barr’s ticket punch for a run like Ron Paul’s run this year. In five years, the only thing that anyone who was outside the LP in 2008 won’t know much of anything about how the campaign was conducted, only that it existed and he was the candidate (if that). From this run, he’ll have an expanded donor and activist database to attach to that already held by the “Leadership Fund” slush PAC, and increased visibility and street cred with the RLC/Club For Growth types in the GOP.

  8. The flyer was produced by the Barr campaign. It takes about 5 seconds to verify these things.

Some of you folks fly off the handle for the smallest shit.

  9. Mike,

    You write:

“But then, this campaign doesn’t seem to be a takeover of the LP, but a raiding party. I think that Barr, Verney and Viguerie didn’t join the LP to take it over, but to loot and pillage it, then leave a bit of scorched earth in their wake when they leave.”

I’m at the point of thinking it’s a little more than a raid, and a little less than a takeover. I think it’s a “stalking horse” campaign, — that its purpose for the most part is to force “reform” on the GOP by making sure McCain doesn’t win. Then Barr, Viguerie et al go back to the GOP as “true conservatives” to try and take charge.

  10. Hmm, Barr has been — in most of his appearances and website, etc. — been pushing the LP, to my satisfaction. This brochure seems inappropriate to me, too, but has anyone bothered to ask the campaign: what’s up with this?

Might be a hasty, slapdash thing that someone put out just to a limited audience. We don’t know, do we?

  11. Chris: I am very well aware that the brochure was produced by the Barr campaign, and I don’t care about that one way or the other. The concern is not about Barr, but that the LP National Media Director is distributing a brochure which doesn’t mention the Libertarian Party, or even the word “libertarian”.

  12. This event is not the first occasion when Andrew Davis has distributed something which seems inappropriate for him to be distributing in his official capacity as media directrix for the LP. He was not only involved in distributing, but was quoted in, the press release calling for more federal involvement in child porn crime.
