FBI posts fake hyperlinks to entrap would-be child porn viewers

From The Iconoclast:

The FBI has recently adopted a novel investigative technique: posting hyperlinks that purport to be illegal videos of minors having sex, and then raiding the homes of anyone willing to click on them.

Undercover FBI agents used this hyperlink-enticement technique, which directed Internet users to a clandestine government server, to stage armed raids of homes in Pennsylvania, New York, and Nevada last year. The supposed video files actually were gibberish and contained no illegal images.

A CNET News.com review of legal documents shows that courts have approved of this technique, even though it raises questions about entrapment, the problems of identifying who’s using an open wireless connection–and whether anyone who clicks on a FBI link that contains no child pornography should be automatically subject to a dawn raid by federal police.

Roderick Vosburgh, a doctoral student at Temple University who also taught history at La Salle University, was raided at home in February 2007 after he allegedly clicked on the FBI’s hyperlink. Federal agents knocked on the door around 7 a.m., falsely claiming they wanted to talk to Vosburgh about his car. Once he opened the door, they threw him to the ground outside his house and handcuffed him.

  1. If there was EVER a time to use Online Privacy or Anonymous Web Surfing services, THIS is certainly it. Services like Ultimate Anonymity http://www.Ultimate-Anonymity.com have been around for many years and could prevent such a downfall by simply masking your REAL IP address to the websites you visit. If you throw a bogus IP address to such a web trap, they would be chasing ghosts! the way it should be!

  2. The abuses of justice being committed in the name of fighting the “war against child porn” are far more than just this. The law enforcement agencies sucking taxpayer dollars to fight what is probably a futile battle against child porn are running a massive campaign of lies, distortion, and doublespeak.

  3. You know I used to click on all of those kinds of links, back in the days I used Netscape (2?), I’d have one window with a custom html page linking to a dozen child protection agencies and authorities from different countries .. and another window linking to all the forums I frequented or mod in. I used to think of it as my duty to verify and report anything that could be a kid in danger, I knew a few others (mods) that did the same and I really thought we were making a difference…

these days I wouldn’t dream on clicking on any of them, my own survival instinct has, I am ashamed to say, over-ridden my instinct to protect kids… now I just delete any suspect links as they appear in the forums and feel slightly guilty that my actions are doing nothing more than protecting adults from suffering kids.

I really don’t like the way the world has turned out.
